American Gangster

Tookie_williams_1

In celebration of Black History Month, I wanted to share my new favorite show (past favorites include The Wire, The Sopranos, Lockdown on A&E). It is American Gangster on BET.

It is a documentary style show that explores the crimes of infamous Black figures such as Stanley "Tookie" Williams and "Freeway" Ricky Ross. It doesn't glorify the crimes, but seeks to understand how they came to power and how that affected the broader Black community.

Last night, I learned that "Freeway" Ricky Ross, THE crack dealer of the 80's in LA for all of you who aren't from here, was supplied his drugs by a CIA funded Contra. Remember Iran Contra. With the support and protection of the CIA, the Contras were making money selling cocaine in South Central. And for all of you who now think it is a crackkpot show about conspiracies, after a news article came out regarding the connection between Crack in LA, Iran, and the Contras, the Director of the CIA himself came to South Central to talk to the community. Of course denying any explicit knowledge of their informant's money making. Although you would think the CIA would question how their informant, who they paid $42,000 a year, made over 2 million dollars a day?
