reacTable - better playing with frequency

Reactable

A recent invention from the Music Technology Group from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the reacTable operates similar to the new Microsoft Surface, only it transmits frequencies for playing electronic music. How it works: little blocks, each with its own frequency or function (say, playing notes in a musical scale), are placed on the surface and transmit distinct sounds, which can be adjusted according to their placement on the surface relative to each other and how they are moved around. For example, spin the block to the right, and the frequency increases; spin back to the left, and the frequency decreases. What you get is an intutive instrument that is easy for one to create their own distinct sound, in the form of a well-designed, backlit display. The potential for interactivity -- think of how many people can play this instrument at once! - seems limitless. A Fall 2006 demo shows off the invention - so you can hear what you're reading about.

Watch & Listen to the reacTable demo.

Office Green movement theme song?

I’d like to nominate this song as the theme song of our office’s efforts at being “Green”.

It’s a fairly obscure song from Joe Strummer (formerly of the clash, now deceased) that is gaining lots of notoriety now as the theme song for “John From Cincinatti”

Weird Web Trail: Conspiracy Theory — Or Marketing For Nine Inch Nails LP?

281x2111

The contents of some conspiracy theorist's personal manifesto? The plot of a rote first-person shooter? The results of a quick jaunt through Snopes.com? Actually, it's all part of the elaborate (and somewhat terrifying) concept behind Nine Inch Nails' upcoming Year Zero album (due April 17), details of which are currently being disseminated through a series of increasingly spooky — and downright odd — Web sites.

The Velvet Underground Finally Sold Out.

Sort of.

Thevelvetundergroundetnicothevelvetunder

Forty years after it was made, The Velvet Underground's first recording has become a financial hit — in cyberspace. Bought for 75 cents four years ago at a Manhattan flea market, the rare recording of music that ended up on the influential New York band's first album, "The Velvet Underground & Nico," sold on eBay for a closing bid of $155,401.
