Global Warming Ready Fashion

Mount_rushmore_diesel

Diesel is also going GREEN.

"In print ads promoting its spring/summer collection, the Italian-based clothing company depicts landscapes that have been transformed by environmental disaster. The funny thing about the "Global Warming Ready" campaign is that Diesel gets to have it both ways. Its arch attitude represents the triumph of cleverness over meaning, of sarcasm over what's sacred. It speaks to a culture of parody, in which the meta-news is invoked before the actual news is digested. (Or, as in the recent death of Anna Nicole Smith, the jokes begin before the body grows cold.) The photographic landscapes of Diesel's print campaign are surreal, but certain conventions of the fashion world are secure: The models are still svelte, and stylishness still triumphs over all. You can't be too well-dressed for the apocalypse." Author, Libby Copeland.

Irony of Romping Monday and Fat Tuesday

Brazil_carnavel_1

In Latin countries, the CARNAVAL is centered on Tuesday (Mardi Gras, Martedi Grasso), but all of these traditions involve a raucous sending up of normal decorum. Carnival can be understood as letting off steam ahead of the austerities of Lent. If gluttony marks the Monday-Tuesday festivities, the overconsumption comes originally from the practical need to clear the household of the food and drink forbidden in the penitential season, which begins with ashes on Wednesday. But more is at stake in the wildness than a mere prelude to penance.

This week's glad interruption in time is a gift from the deep past. Carnival foolishness is self-surpassing, whether deemed holy or not. Either way, it is a reminder that we humans on the earth were made for more than appears before the eyes.

American Gangster

Tookie_williams_1

In celebration of Black History Month, I wanted to share my new favorite show (past favorites include The Wire, The Sopranos, Lockdown on A&E). It is American Gangster on BET.

It is a documentary style show that explores the crimes of infamous Black figures such as Stanley "Tookie" Williams and "Freeway" Ricky Ross. It doesn't glorify the crimes, but seeks to understand how they came to power and how that affected the broader Black community.

Last night, I learned that "Freeway" Ricky Ross, THE crack dealer of the 80's in LA for all of you who aren't from here, was supplied his drugs by a CIA funded Contra. Remember Iran Contra. With the support and protection of the CIA, the Contras were making money selling cocaine in South Central. And for all of you who now think it is a crackkpot show about conspiracies, after a news article came out regarding the connection between Crack in LA, Iran, and the Contras, the Director of the CIA himself came to South Central to talk to the community. Of course denying any explicit knowledge of their informant's money making. Although you would think the CIA would question how their informant, who they paid $42,000 a year, made over 2 million dollars a day?
